Treatment

Ibogaine therapy is a natural psychoactive plant based medical treatment. It is a safe treatment under medical supervision. It is mainly used by Ibogaine Therapy UK to treat chemical dependency, as well for obsessive compulsive conditions. We also offer ibogaine for experiential, psychological and spiritual purposes.

Treatment involves three phases:

Assessment

Aftercare

Assessment

The assessment involves a one and a half hour consultation with our medical practitioner, who will perform a comprehensive medical and psychological workup. This is important to address the suitability of ibogaine therapy, and also to help insure its safety. Certain investigations, including blood tests and electrocardiogram are essential and will be arranged.

Following the initial assessment, further sessions will be offered. These 50 minute sessions provide a space to look more in depth at psychological issues prior to ibogaine therapy. As well, acupuncture can be provided for certain medical conditions. These sessions can also provide space for discussion around ibogaine therapy and further questions you may have about treatment.

Ibogaine Therapy

The ibogaine therapy is performed over two days and one night. This can take place either in our London facility, or alternatively can be arranged if appropriate in your own home or place of your choosing. There is also an option to have treatment in a tranquil and picturesque setting in rural Galicia, Spain, which would be over an extended period. Monitoring of vital signs by our medical practitioner will occur throughout the session, including heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiogram if required.

A test dose will be given in the morning, and the main dose of ibogaine at midday. The experience is powerful and mind altering, and one that is experienced lying down in bed. The ibogaine generally starts to have an effect after a half hour to two hours, which may commence with a buzzing or whirring sound. Visions then usually begin, which are often dream-like, and last around four to eight hours. They may involve historical aspects of your life, or be more fantastical in nature, or they may be minimal.

If you have been addicted to opiates, your withdrawal symptoms will be relieved in the first few hours of treatment.

After the visions cease, there is a more reflective stage for the next twelve hours or so. There may be more awareness of the surroundings again, reflection on the experience, or increased focus on the body or bodily symptoms. These symptoms include nausea and vomiting, dizziness and loss of balance, restlessness, muscular aches and abdominal cramps.

After this period and as the ibogaine wears off over the next eight hours or so, you will feel more inclined to want to get up and sit quietly, and maybe have something small to eat, which will be at the end of day two. On rare occasions the treatment needs to be extended as the ibogaine has not worn off but this is not typical.

Over the next few days you may have much less energy, and can become emotional or tearful. Insomnia is frequent, although less sleep is felt to be needed. These symptoms will pass. For those who had ibogaine therapy for chemical dependency, you will now be free of your addiction, free of withdrawal symptoms, although minor symptoms may exist, and free from cravings.

Aftercare

Sessions will be provided for follow up, and progress monitored over the next few months. This is helpful in consolidating and integrating the experience, and providing support. Acupuncture can be helpful for physical symptoms, for relaxation and to support detox. Those wanting ongoing aftercare, psychotherapy or acupuncture can continue regular sessions in the long term.
